Established in 1926, Toro–Semliki Wildlife Reserve was one of Uganda’s first protected areas — created to safeguard the large herds of Uganda kob that once roamed the Semliki plains. Covering 542 km², the reserve lies in the western Rift Valley, straddling Ntoroko and Kabarole Districts, and offers one of Uganda’s most picturesque landscapes — a sweeping mosaic of savannah, riverine forest, and palm-dotted plains framed by the Rwenzori Mountains and Lake Albert.

Toro–Semliki remains one of Uganda’s most diverse ecosystems and a model for community-based conservation, blending wildlife protection with local livelihoods.

Landscape and Setting

Few places in Uganda can match Toro–Semliki’s setting. The reserve lies between the Rwenzori range, the Kijura escarpment, and the eastern shores of Lake Albert. From a relatively low altitude of 700 metres, visitors are treated to panoramic views of the Congo’s Blue Mountains across the lake and the glacial peaks of the Rwenzoris to the south-west.
The vegetation is dominated by open acacia–combretum woodland and grassy savannah, punctuated by Borassus palm forests, riparian woodland, and swamps near Lake Albert. This mixture of habitats supports remarkable biodiversity and seasonal wildlife movements between forest and plains.

Wildlife and Birdlife

Toro–Semliki shares many species with Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Parks, including elephant, buffalo, warthog, waterbuck, Uganda kob, and giant forest hog.
The reserve is unique in hosting both savannah and forest elephants, and even a rare hybrid population resulting from interbreeding between the two forms.

Primate species include chimpanzees, olive baboons, vervet, red-tailed, and black-and-white colobus monkeys. Researchers from the University of Indiana continue to study the chimpanzee communities in the riverine forests of Mugiri, near Semliki Safari Lodge.

For bird enthusiasts, Toro–Semliki is a paradise, with more than 440 recorded species, including the red-necked falcon, black-billed barbet, Abyssinian ground-hornbill, and the elusive shoebill stork, often spotted in the marshes along Lake Albert.
