Uganda welcomes travellers from all nations with a straightforward e-Visa process and clear entry requirements. Learn how to apply online, what documents you’ll need, and why Entebbe International Airport is your gateway to one of Africa’s most vibrant destinations.
Uganda welcomes travellers from all over the world with a streamlined e-Visa system and a warm, open-door policy. Whether you’re visiting for tourism, business, studies, or family, this guide explains everything you need to know before boarding your flight to the Pearl of Africa.
Entry to Uganda is open to tourists from all countries, provided they meet immigration and health requirements. All visas and permits are processed through the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control (DCIC). Applications are submitted online, and approvals are issued electronically.
All visitors must apply through the official Uganda Immigration portal before travel. The application process is simple, but all uploaded documents must be in English. Visa fees are non-refundable, and additional documents may be requested depending on the purpose of travel.
Purpose: Tourism, medical treatment, or visiting family and friends.
Validity: Up to 3 months.
Fee: USD 50 (non-refundable).
Approval period: Once approved, your Visa Authorisation Letter is valid for 90 days — you must travel within that period or reapply.
Required Documents:
Passport biodata page (valid for at least six months)
Recent passport-size photo
Yellow Fever vaccination certificate
Tour plan, itinerary, or hotel booking
Return or onward ticket
Business (Meetings and Conferences):
Applicants must provide an invitation letter from a registered company or organisation, a valid passport, photo, Yellow Fever certificate, and host details.
Family Visits and Studies:
An invitation or admission letter is required, along with proof of the host’s status in Uganda.
Multiple-Entry and East African Tourist Visas:
These visas allow extended or regional travel across Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda for up to 90 days, making them ideal for regional explorers.
Visitors intending to work or conduct long-term business must apply for an entry permit (work permit) sponsored by a registered organisation.
The system classifies permits into categories — from Class A (diplomatic) to Class H (residents with assured income).
Each class covers a specific sector, including agriculture, mining, manufacturing, trade, professional services, NGOs, and religious work.
Validity ranges from six months to three years, depending on the permit type.
Note for East African Nationals:
Kenyan and Rwandan citizens are exempt from work-permit fees but still need valid registration. Tanzanian nationals currently pay USD 1,500 per year.
All travellers must present a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate on arrival. Other recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Malaria is present year-round, so travellers should carry repellent and consult their doctor about preventive medication.
Having these ready ensures a smooth airport experience and quick clearance at immigration.
Most international visitors arrive through Entebbe International Airport (EBB), located 46 kilometres from Kampala. At immigration, you will present your passport, printed e-Visa approval, vaccination certificate, and return ticket. Your visa will be stamped on arrival.
Regional visitors may also enter via land borders from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, or the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Uganda’s safaris are world-famous, but the country’s capital deserves time too. Before heading to Queen Elizabeth or Bwindi, spend a day exploring Kampala’s markets, museums, and lakeside restaurants. It’s the perfect introduction to Uganda’s hospitality and culture.
Stay at Eric Wilkins Apartments in Zana, just off Entebbe Road — ideally located for airport transfers and quick city access. The residences provide a comfortable base while you finalise travel documents or plan your next destination.
If someone is coming to meet you at Entebbe International Airport, you will have to meet them outside the terminal building. Only passengers with tickets are allowed in the building.
To enter Uganda, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive. Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to. You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stole
You must apply for a Uganda visa online. You will need to upload the required documents and certificates. In most cases, a yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory.
The immigration authorities will email you a visa authorisation letter with a barcode. Print this letter to present on arrival. Border officials will issue your visa.
Alternatively, you may take the printed letter to a Ugandan embassy, where the visa will be issued.
You can also apply online for an East African tourist visa. This costs 100 US dollars and allows multiple entries into Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda within a 90-day period.
