Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest and most iconic conservation area, where the Nile River carves its way through untamed wilderness. Established in 1952 and spanning over 3,800 square kilometres, this park captures the essence of African adventure — dramatic scenery, extraordinary wildlife, and rich history all in one destination.

The park lies in north-western Uganda, at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley. Here, the Bunyoro escarpment descends into a mosaic of acacia woodlands and palm-dotted plains. As the morning mist lifts, herds of elephants and giraffes emerge, while the distant thunder of the falls echoes across the savannah.

The Iconic Murchison Falls

At the centre of the park lies the spectacular Murchison Falls — where the mighty Victoria Nile narrows to just eight metres before plunging 45 metres into a rocky cauldron. The resulting spray forms a perpetual rainbow, a natural spectacle that must be seen — and heard — to be believed. Below the falls, the river flows calmly toward Lake Albert, lined with hippos, crocodiles, and an astonishing variety of birds.

Wildlife and Ecosystems

Murchison Falls National Park supports over 144 mammal species, 556 bird species, and a diversity of reptiles and amphibians. The northern plains are home to elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, Uganda kobs, and Jackson’s hartebeest, while the southern forests shelter chimpanzees and other primates in the Budongo Forest Reserve.
