Perched high in Uganda’s southwestern corner, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits between 2,227 and 4,127 metres above sea level. Despite its small size — just 33.7 km² — it is one of the country’s most biologically and culturally rich destinations. Established as a National Park in 1991, it protects endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, both of which thrive in its dense, mist-shrouded forests.

The name Mgahinga comes from “Gahinga,” a local word describing piles of volcanic stones cleared from farmland at the volcanoes’ base — a simple term that reflects the area’s deep agricultural and cultural ties.

“Mgahinga may be small, but its diversity and scenery make it one of the most special places in East Africa,” says the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB). “It’s the meeting point of nature, culture, and adventure.”

• Guided gorilla tracking with rangers to the Nyakagezi family, the park’s habituated transboundary gorilla group.
