Overview

Set within Uganda’s western Rift Valley, Kigezi Wildlife Reserve offers a serene and less-travelled safari experience. Established in 1952, this 265 km² (33,000-hectare) reserve lies just south of Queen Elizabeth National Park, separated from Lake Edward by a narrow 7-kilometre strip of protected land. Together, these areas form a continuous corridor of savannah, forest, and wetlands supporting some of the richest biodiversity in East Africa.

Kigezi’s tranquil atmosphere makes it ideal for travellers seeking quiet exploration — where acacia woodlands, grasslands, and crater landscapes host both savannah and forest species.

Geography and Landscape

Kigezi is positioned at approximately 0°30’S, 29°50’E, on the western arm of the Central African Rift Valley, at an altitude of about 1,050 metres. The landscape features gently rolling hills interspersed with riverine valleys, grass savannahs, and patches of moist deciduous forest.

To the west, the shimmering waters of Lake Edward mark the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, while the Rwenzori Mountains rise in the distant north. This scenic mix of open plains and forested ridges creates a rich ecological mosaic, perfectly suited to Uganda’s diverse wildlife.

Vegetation

The reserve’s vegetation resembles the southern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, combining moist deciduous woodland with grass savannah. Dominant trees include Acacia and Albizia species, while grasses such as Imperata, Cymbopogon, Hyparrhenia, and Beckeropsis form the lush ground cover.

The alternating green of woodland and gold of open grasslands paints a vivid picture during the rainy season, attracting grazers and browsing species alike.

Wildlife

Kigezi Wildlife Reserve supports a fascinating mix of forest and savannah fauna. Mammals include eastern black-and-white colobus, red colobus, chimpanzees, and classic savannah species such as elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, and Uganda kobs.

Other species commonly seen are topi, oribi, warthogs, waterbuck, bushbuck, and the giant forest hog — one of Uganda’s most distinctive animals. Hippopotamuses inhabit the wetland zones, while smaller mammals and primates thrive in the forested valleys.

Birdlife is abundant and closely mirrors that of Queen Elizabeth National Park, with over 600 species recorded in the wider landscape. Visitors may spot African fish eagles, grey crowned cranes, black-headed gonoleks, and flamingos along the crater lakes during certain seasons.

Conservation and Zoning

Kigezi serves as a buffer zone between Queen Elizabeth National Park and the populated farmlands to the south and east. Although there is no internal zoning, its role as a wildlife corridor is vital for maintaining animal movement between the southern reaches of the park and adjacent habitats such as Kayonza Forest.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) manages the reserve, balancing protection with community engagement to reduce human-wildlife conflict and control poaching pressures.

Access and Location

The reserve is located roughly 420 kilometres southwest of Kampala, accessible via the Mbarara–Kabale road, with connections through Queen Elizabeth National Park. A road from the park to Kabale crosses the reserve, offering scenic views and opportunities to spot wildlife along the way.

Travellers can also reach Kigezi via Kasese Airstrip by charter flight from Entebbe International Airport (EBB) or Kajjansi Airfield, followed by a drive through the park’s southern circuit.

Visitor Activities

Though less developed than larger parks, Kigezi’s charm lies in its natural stillness and open exploration. Activities include:

  • Game drives along unpaved trails shared with Queen Elizabeth’s southern plains

  • Birdwatching at crater lakes and wetlands

  • Guided forest walks in search of primates

  • Community visits to nearby rural villages for cultural immersion

Health & Safety

Visitors should travel with a certified guide, carry insect repellent, sunscreen, and adequate water, and use a 4×4 vehicle during the rainy season when tracks can be muddy. Poaching and encroachment have decreased due to improved ranger patrols, but travel within the reserve remains guided for safety.

  • Combine Kigezi with Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kyambura Gorge, or Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for a diverse western Uganda safari circuit.
