Uganda Travel Guide: Entry, Health, and Safety Tips for Visitors

Uganda welcomes travellers with warmth, natural beauty and a sense of adventure unmatched in Africa. Known as The Pearl of Africa, it’s a destination for explorers, families, and business visitors alike. From Kampala’s lively streets to serene national parks, there’s something for every traveller — but a little preparation ensures a smoother, safer experience.

This guide brings together immigration advice, embassy tips, health recommendations, and practical insights to help you plan your trip confidently.

🛫 Before You Fly: Immigration & Visa Information

Uganda requires most visitors to have a visa, except nationals from a few East African and Commonwealth countries. Always check visa eligibility based on your nationality before booking.

Visas can be applied for online through the Uganda e-Visa portal. Standard tourist visas are valid for 90 days, while East African Tourist Visas allow entry into Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda.

📍 Tip: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your entry date and has one blank page for stamping.

Uganda Airlines, the national carrier, offers convenient connections from Dubai, Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Johannesburg, Mombasa, Mogadishu, Mumbai, Lagos, and Juba, among others. Book flights directly through the official airline site:

🧳 Packing Essentials

Uganda’s climate varies by altitude — warm and tropical in the lowlands, cooler in the mountains. Pack light, breathable clothing for the day and warmer layers for evenings.

Include:

  • 🧢 Sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen

  • 🦟 Insect repellent (for mosquitoes)

  • 🧥 Lightweight rain jacket (especially March–May and Sept–Nov)

  • 👟 Comfortable walking shoes or sandals; hiking boots for mountain trails

💉 Health & Safety

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry. Other recommended vaccinations include typhoid, hepatitis A/B, and tetanus. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly advised, particularly for visits outside Kampala.

Carry a personal first aid kit, hand sanitiser, and prescribed medications.
Stay hydrated, use bottled water, and choose restaurants with good hygiene practices.

For safety:

  • Avoid isolated areas after dark

  • Keep valuables discreet

  • Use licensed taxis or registered drivers

💰 Money Tips

The currency is the Ugandan Shilling (UGX).

  • 💵 Major currencies like USD, GBP, and EUR are widely accepted.

  • Exchange money only at banks or licensed forex bureaus.

  • ATMs are available in major towns.

  • Some hotels and lodges accept international cards, but smaller markets are cash-only.

Bring clean, recent USD notes (post-2013 print) for easier exchange.

🚗 Transportation

Uganda offers several transport options:

  • Boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis): quick but use helmeted, registered drivers only.

  • Private hire cars or taxis: available in Kampala and Entebbe — ideal for safe travel.

  • 4×4 safari vehicles: recommended for national park journeys.

  • Domestic flights: local charters connect Kampala (Kajjansi Airfield) and Entebbe to major parks like Murchison Falls or Kidepo.

🧭 Book Safely & Responsibly

When booking tours or safaris:

  • Choose UTB-licensed tour operators (Uganda Tourism Board).

  • Verify that guides are certified and insured.

  • Ask for safety briefings before activities such as rafting, hiking, or gorilla trekking.

  • Always check weather forecasts before outdoor excursions.

💼 Travel Insurance

Comprehensive insurance is essential, covering:

  • Medical emergencies

  • Evacuation

  • Trip delays or cancellations

  • Lost baggage

If planning mountain hikes, gorilla trekking, or adventure sports, ensure your policy includes high-altitude and wildlife activities.

🗣️ Local Language & Communication

English and Kiswahili are Uganda’s official languages, while Luganda dominates in central Uganda. Most Ugandans in cities speak conversational English.

📱 Connectivity:
Buy a local SIM card (MTN or Airtel) at Entebbe Airport or in Kampala.
Most hotels, lodges, and cafés offer free Wi-Fi.
Add global roaming before travel if you prefer using your home SIM.

🌍 Embassy Travel Advice

Most foreign embassies recommend:

  • Registering with your embassy or consulate upon arrival

  • Keeping digital and paper copies of passports and travel insurance

  • Following local news and official advisories

According to the U.S. Embassy in Kampala, Uganda is considered stable and generally safe for tourism, though travellers should remain alert to road safety and petty theft risks. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) echoes similar advice, noting that Uganda is friendly and safe for visitors when standard precautions are observed.

👣 Cultural Courtesy

Ugandans are warm and respectful. Greetings matter — always say “hello” or “oli otya” before starting a conversation. Modest dress is appreciated, especially in rural or religious settings.
